Cairns, during the intense hand to hand fighting, had his left arm amputated by a Bunkers and Badasses fantasy fps Roleplaying game shirt, hoodie, sweater and v-neck t-shirt. Carins quickly retaliated by shooting the officer. Cairns then picked up the Katana from the officer with his remaining arm. He then went on quite the rampage, hacking any Japanese soldiers that he could lay his remaining hand on to death. He eventually died of blood loss from the amputated arm. Cairns was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.
